about

Steeped in honesty and candour, The Humbuckin’ Pickups weave intimacy with whit in this new single – Just Like Winter. Maldon Minstrel and Troubadour Foundation award winners, the 4-piece Victorian outfit showcase not only their award-winning songwriting, but effortless musicianship as they explore themes of perceptions. As frontman Ewan Cloonan’s silvery baritone sings “if you open up the book, on any given page, you’ll only get one part of the tale…”

Cloonan explains “While the antagonist isn’t a real person… we've all met someone similar. They're fragile. They overcompensate. They're lost. They're searching. They seem overbearing. They're vulnerable. They're as warm as a winter's day. They're just like winter… however, this song shows that you don’t always understand their story and you shouldn’t pretend to.”

LYRICS

Susanna crashed into my life like a boxer trading blows
Full of self-belief and self-importance
She seemed to leave a trail of broken men with broken dreams
She’d refer to them as her lost causes

Fabrication of wrong doing done by almost every one of them
Boldly believing her own glory
I spent my last winter wrapped in her arms and tangled web
Of bended truths and convoluted stories
Everyday another story

If you open up a book on any given page
You only get one part of a tale
Be careful what you ask
you might not like what you’ll find
Sometimes it’s hard to keep an open mind
Read between the lines
Read between the lines

Every Friday after work I’d go and drink away my problems
With every bastard that had caused them
I still recall that dress she wore
When she threw me up against that wall and made
Everybody else seem unimportant

I was riding on a wave of euphoria and doubt
And guarded preservation
As she yelled at anyone who’d listen truths about her facts
And rode her high horse over every conversation
Now I’m over every conversation

When Susanna left my life we were like boxers trading blows
Full of loathing venom hate and accusation
I thought about forgiveness maybe hers or maybe mine
But that was only holding on in desperation

I still see her now and then, her arms around another man
If our eyes meet her smile’s bitter
I wonder what she tells him or if she mentions me at all
Seems like her shoulder’s even colder than last winter
Now every day feels just like winter
